Our Goal

The water crisis in Flint, Michigan is a human rights violation that has left many citizens with several matters to be concerned about. From the health consequences to the costs of the damage, we believe firmly that every possible action needs to be taken in order to help out all of those who have been affected by this situation.

We have created the digital campaign #careforflint because we hope to do our part to both inform others about the crisis who may not previously have known about it, and also to try and bring better access to healthcare to the citizens of Flint, through a petition that we have created on change.org.

There is no denying that the crisis in Flint will be expensive to fix. The city started working on plans to replace the lead service pipes with copper ones, and the cost of that procedure alone can cost up to fifty million dollars. Another large expense will be providing water filters and bottled water to the people of Flint. We recognize these costs that both the city and state are facing, and hope that by raising awareness of this issue, people viewing our campaign will feel empowered to help make a change as well. Most of the campaigns for Flint have been about helping the citizens to pay for their water bills, and to urge the city to release all funds possible to help pay for the restoration of the water system.

The people of Flint are being faced with a plethora of issues, and the costs involved are not even the greatest of them all. Huge health concerns have been brought about through the lead poisoning that has been caused by the corrosive water.

What makes our campaign unique to others is that our main goal is to provide healthcare to the people of Flint, and to help with health-related costs that are bound to arise.

Consequences from the lead poisoning may leave thousands of children permanently handicapped, as well as many adults very sick. We believe that the government should provide healthcare to all of those affected by the Flint water crisis.

Currently the federal government has declared a state of emergency which allows for up to five million dollars in federal funding to relief but they cannot provide more as the Flint disaster is man-made, not a natural disaster.

We have created our petition in hopes to bring additional funding to specifically cover the medical costs that the people of Flint are facing and will continue to face for the rest of the lives of those with lead poisoning.

Some specific goals of our petition are as follows:

  • Additional walk-in health clinics providing free services (such as blood testing for lead and written referrals to specialists)

  • Maintaining medical records of all those affected and offering free yearly checkups to monitor the long term effects of lead poisoning (such as hearing loss and slowed mental development.

  • Access to chelation therapy readily available at all area hospitals (if recommended by specialist)

  • A fund created to help cover future costs as lead poisoning is a chronic condition

We hope that these goals can be attained through our petition and through our digital activism, and at the very least we hope that we have informed and empowered others to take a stand and help the people of Flint too. We want to make sure that if anything like this terrible crisis happens again in another city or state, this can work as a model so that the measures that need to be taken in order to aid those affected will be.
